Thank you to everyone who got involved or supported. We've almost raised £5000 for Diabetes UK and it's not too late to donate. :-)
I took almost 10 hours for the whole attempt including running and performing along the way.

Hello. Thanks for visiting my EltonJohnathon fundraising website. My name is Michael Kohn, and that's me grinning like the cat who got the cream, sitting down at mile 25, just before I crossed the finish line.On Sunday October 3rd 2021, I'm ran the London Virtual Marathon.I did it my way, because they said you could. And I thought to myself, right, how do I have the most fun possible, get fit, and raise some cash for a worthy cause that needs everyone's help and awareness. So six months ago, I devised a project called the EltonJohnathon. This involved me running 26.2 miles, singing and playing 26 Elton John songs and making 4 costume changes en route.I will be running into central London up from Crystal Palace, avoiding the main marathon route, and stopping at 4 venues to play, sing and raise money for Diabetes UK.Now by day, I work in innovation. I am neither a runner, nor a professional singer nor pianist, but I figured this innovative combination was worth a try and I might actually enjoy my day doing the marathon in this unique way.The project was a great success, but not perfect execution by any means. In the end, I over ran by 3 miles, I under sang by 2 songs, (I hummed them to myself that evening so figured this counts) and the Donald Duck costume I'd ordered never came in time. But after na steward's enquiry, with myself, I decided the extra milage compensates for the missing performances, and that I can award myself the medal.I've now updated the website so that you can read more about the challenge, learn about my Race Day including details and photos of my route, the venues I am playing at, and the costumes I am wearing. There's some photos and videos that might make you smile. But importantly, perhaps you know someone who suffers from diabetes? If so, please think about donating to my campaign, I've raised over £4500 and would like to get to £5000 by the end of the project.Thank you so much.
I clearly needed some help finishing my EltonJohnathon. So I organised a Finishing Party at the Covent Garden Social and loads of close friends, including the many friends from London City Voices came to sing along with me.
Training for an EltonJohnathon takes a special kind of preparation, combing running, singing and playing piano, and fancy dress. To date I've documented my training in a whole half marathon of videos like the one above, my so called EltonJohnathon Piano Practice Runs. 🏃🎹🏃
Okay, so why did I do this?
I had 3 key motivations for undertaking this project. Firstly I was getting quite unhealthy in the early stages of covid lockdown and needed to make some radical lifestyle changes. I couldn't face a traditional fitness bootcamp though, so a needed to create a training framework which involved a little bit of fun.Secondly, I wanted to do something in which I could involve my friends in some way, not just to cheer me on but to be part of the project, and where I could get out and reconnect with them.
Finally, I wanted to raise some funds for Diabetes UK. Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, and it is probably our greatest health challenge ahead of us. I also wanted to learn more about the condition. And so the EltonJohnathon project was born.
1: Get fit and healthy again
Over lockdown I had put on weight and weighed in at just over 20 stone! I also turned 50 at the start of the year, so I knew that I just had to start to make some healthier life choices otherwise nothing good would come of it.Like many people I had tried to lose weight. I got on the apps, and read some books, and tried a few diets. The needle wasn't moving that fast. I needed some big audacious goal to work towards over a sufficiently long period of time. The London Virtual Marathon allows you to run your own route at your own pace. Which means there would be no pressure in how fast you have to run, or even where and when you ran, so long as you cover the mileage on the day.I saw this as the ideal opportunity to change my lifestyle by taking on the radical fitness challenge that is a marathon, but also I saw this 'run it your way' format as an opportunity to be a little creative, have some fun, whilst raising some money for charity.
The problem was, however steady I go, I'm still quite heavy, and I don't like running that much. But I do like playing and singing the piano.Whilst I already knew how to play a handful of Elton John Songs, I didn't know as many as I perhaps should after being an Elton John fan for so long and singing his songs in the shower.I felt that if I pushed myself however, I might be able to match the number of miles that I ran with the number of songs that I could perform on the same day.By the way, did I say I am not a professional singer, nor pianist? Well if I'm honest, learning to perform this number of songs was possibly the bigger challenge than covering the miles.
2: Reconnect with friends face to face
Wanting to include lots of friends in my training, I put a call out on Facebook for people willing to let me use their pianos or keyboards during my training. The Piano Practice runs started quite simple, and then they evolved to a format which have helped me get out and reconnect with friends after a long period of lockdown. This has been one of my favourite elements of my training. In the end I made a whole half marathon of training videos, and had a laugh with over 20 friends who hosted them. I hope you enjoy watching them as much as we did in making them.
3: Raise money for Diabetes UK
Type 2 diabetes runs in my family as the men get older. My father and most of my uncles suffer from the condition. But to be honest I didn't know much about it, and still have much to learn.Diabetes UK is the charity leading the fight against the most devastating and fastest growing health crisis of our time, creating a world where diabetes can do no harm. It’s a fight that involves all of us – sharing knowledge and taking diabetes on together.
Help me smash my fundraising target and reach £5000!
So far I've raised just over £4500 for Diabetes UK from around 100 people. I'd still like to raise a little more reading this, please consider donating and or sharing this website with friends who might also care about our shared diabetes crisis.Diabetes UK is working towards a future where diabetes can do no harm. I'm convinced we all have a role to play in countering the direct and indirect effects of this disease, so I am doing my bit to raise awareness, reduce my personal risk, and hopefully raise a little cash for the important research and engagement work that Diabetes UK does.If you've enjoyed learning about the EltonJohnathon, and you'd like to donate to my fundraising campaign, hit the button to open JustGiving in a new window.

Welcome to my Race Day: October 3rd 2021
I Think It's Gonna Be A Long Long Time...before I cross the finish line. But that's okay, because I'm running in a race of one, and being helped by a lot of friends I'm now Feeling Like A True Survivor. I hope to see you somewhere along the route or online.
This project may sound crazy, but there is a plan. Below you can scroll down to see my timetable, the routes I'm running, where I am playing, the songs I am singing and the costumes I'm wearing.
Timetable
This timing is my best guess. I am 'Jeffing' some of the race which is a pattern of running and walking. This method is designed to ensure I keep to a set pace and maintains my energy to keep going all day.

Route
There are 5 legs to the EltonJohnathan. I am running with friends for 4 of these legs, and you can follow my route on Strava. I will add the Strava links below shortly. My route avoids the main marathon route and the crowds as best it can but it is still a central run, so if you are heading into town to watch the marathon, you may catch me
Overall
Starting from Betts Park Open Air Gym in Crystal Palace, I will make my way via 4 stops and costume changes to The Covent Garden Social.

Pianos & Venues
There are 4 places I will actually sit down to play a piano. These are strategically located along the route. Two of them are open to public, you can just pitch up to singalong. You need to book a table for breakfast if you are intending to come to The Toulouse Lautrec. The finishing party singalong at the Covent Garden Social should be fun but may get crowded, so come early to avoid dissapointment.
Toulouse Lautrec Restaurant
Piano Room
The Toulouse Lautrec is a fabulous venue and welcomed my approach to play for Sunday morning brunch diners. I'll be on the first floor in the Piano room. I'll be 10-11miles into my run when I sit down to play at 10am, and I'm going to try and play the more gentle numbers so I don't put people off their breakfast. Book a table to avoid disappointment.
St Pancras Station Parade
Sir Elton John surprised and delighted St. Pancras visitors with a mesmerising piano performance in February, 2016. Following this performance, the legendary Rocket Man himself also left this beautiful Yamaha piano behind as a gift, which he kindly signed before donating. His message reads: “Enjoy this piano. It’s a gift. Love, Elton John.” The famous piano sits in the station's lower ground floor Arcade for everyone to enjoy. I'm hoping to play a short set from 1pm with a couple of duets with choir mates.
Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre
Diabetes UK are organising a Finishers Party for their marathon runners, and I am looking forward to pitching up for my 3rd piano stop to sing a few songs on my own digital piano along with fellow runners whom I have only met on a facebook group to date. Because I will only be at Mile 23, I will be singing "I'm Still Running".
The Songs
I'm still learning all the songs, so this section is subject to change.
I'm going to update it soon with the song lyrics so if you see me at any of the venues you can click the link to red the lyrics and easily singalong.

Costumes
Costume 1
The first leg is the longest, so I'm running in a RELATIVELY sensible runners kit, including my piano pants (which is my fashion cover of the suit designed for Elton by Andre Miripolsky and worn by him in 1980 at the Central Park concert). I'll be donning the Diabetes UK running top as I run up from SE London to centre of town and give some serious focus to my run.
Costume 2
I'll change into something a little smarter for playing at the Toulouse Lautrec Piano Room, including a waistcoat, bowtie and a straw boater from the I'm Still Standing video.
Costume 3
Running to the Royal Albert Hall, I'll likely need to speed up to meet the timing for St Pancras, so will change into my running top with my name on the back and QR codes to make it easy for people to donate to my campaign.
Costume 4
Running back from St Pancras, I aim to be dressed as Elton in a Donald Duck costume, which he famously wore at his 1980 concert in central park.
Costume5
I'm going to Vaseline up for a short final leg to the Covent Garden Social, dressed in a copy of Elton's famous Dodger's costume.
Winner's teeshirt
I'm in a race of one. Some I'm going to win it. If all goes well I'll be wearing this winning teeshirt at the end.

The EltonJohnathon Piano Practice Runs
As part of my training, I asked friends on Facebook if I could run round to their houses and practice songs on their piano or keyboard. And many said "Yes, please come!"
In the end, I've ended up with a whole half marathon of EltonJohnathon Piano Practice Run videos. That is 13 sketch videos in total. Each one was such fun to make as it gave me a reason to get out and about and see friends I hadn't seen over lockdown, whilst broadly sticking to my running training regime. This idea started out as just a simple jog and a little unassuming piano practice on an unfamiliar keyboard. In fact, the first visit to Ben's house had no plan at all. It was just a jog, a stretch, a cup of tea, play the piano and then jog off. There was also no video planned, but Ben just took a quick one and that gave me an idea. Then after Run 3, the format had evolved into a more elaborate comedy-singing sketch, where not everyone was happy to see me when I knocked on their door. This meant I had to be more and more persuasive to be let in to play.Apart from video 13 which I list first, I've organised these videos in order of publication so you can see the progression. I hope they make you chuckle and enjoy them as much as we all did in making them.I've tried to credit everyone involved at the VIP section.
Piano Practice Run 13
Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
This is the final training video in the Piano Practice series, a run to Lucy's which enabled me to reflect a little bit on my whole campaign.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me with these videos and I hope you've enjoyed watching them.
When it comes to persistent charity campaigning, I'm sorry(not sorry) for troubling you for a donation, but please give generously if you can.
Piano Practice Run 1
Daniel
This run was to my friend Ben, and I had no plans or expectations. When Ben asked me if I had finished, in a way that made me think he might want to get rid of me (he didn't) that gave me an idea for the subsequent videos which started to take on a theme.
Piano Practice Run 2
Sacrifice
My second run was in North London. I still didn't really have a plan for these runs, but for this one, I stopped at my friend Arasan from choir to duet to Sacrifice. Arasan is very good at harmonising on the spot, and he will be singing live with me on the day at St Pancras.
Piano Practice Run 3
Your Song
This run was to another choir friend, Rob, who had agreed to let me play his wife's beautiful yamaha grand piano. Only getting in to play it on the day proved more difficult, so I had to be quick.
Piano Practice Run 4
Crocodile Rock
This run was to the home of my choir director Richard who would only let me in if I played Happy Birthday to his wife Kate, and promised not to play any Elton John. I tried, but couldn't help myself. Thanks to Fiona for filming.
Piano Practice Run 5
Can You Feel The Love Tonight?
This is one of my favourite runs. It's a lesson in always being properly dressed for the occasion. Molly ran a strict dress code at the door, but she lent me something appropriate and I was finally able to get in and play.
Piano Practice Run 6
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
This run was on the IoW, a day before the IoW half marathon. Staying with friends Pete and Josephine, Phoebe, Theia Cody and Claire made sure I was fighting fit and ready to race.
Piano Practice Run 7
I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
This run to Caroline and Csaba helped me bust out any demons inside and come face to face with my training blues, especially when carrying a hip injury a few days before a half marathon.
Piano Practice Run 8
Bennie And The Jets
I dropped by school teacher Andy and his hard working girls to "Shake It Loose Together" to Bennie and the Jets. But just one minute, in it was hard to stay concentrated on the schoolwork.
Piano Practice Run 9
Someone Saved My Life Tonight
I got my am and pm timings mixed up when visiting my friend Matt in Kent. But despite the mix up Matt kindly let me in and I got to belt out what is probably my favourite Elton Song.
Piano Practice Run 10
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
This run to Georgia and Toby was fun, jamming with Toby and the Horny-Back Toad on the mantelpiece.
Piano Practice Run 11
Tiny Dancer
When Catherine invited me over to make one of these Piano Practice videos, I didn't expect Emma and Sharon would be busy making their own little masterpiece. As a result this collaboration is definitely one of my favourite videos of the training runs.
Piano Practice Run 12
I'm still Standing (Running)
When my brother’s dance console broke down mid song, thankfully I'm still running and able to step in just in time....

VIPs & Credits
There are so many people to thank in making this project. This includes my friends, family and helpers on the day, friends who collaborated on the Piano Practice Training Run videos, the venues who let me play, including the Toulouse Lautrec and The Covent Garden Social, and of course my kind sponsors who have donated to hard earned cash to my campaign on JustGiving for Diabetes UK. In particular I'd like to thank the Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London for their very kind donation and also Yeoman Warden Mark Anderson who invited me to busk in the bar and raise more money yet.I also have to thank the team at Diabetes UK and all the runners in the group who have been encouraging of my efforts to run the virtual marathon in a different way.
* photo above is me and Caroline in Lucca at the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. I've been a fan of Elton John since I was 17 and started to learn to play "Your Song", and will be fan long after this marathon is over.
And finally I have to thank Sir Elton John, who's creativity and songs I have admired for over 30 years, and whose body of work has inspired me to make this project. I intend to keep learning to play his songs long after the marathon is over.
Runners and Helpers.
A handful of people are supporting me on the day, including my girlfriend Caroline to whom I am forever grateful.
